MEPCO Bill Installments: Rules and Process
Quick answer: Installments are for arrears (old unpaid dues), not for the current month’s bill. Apply at your sub-division office. According to MEPCO, an SDO can allow 3 installments for arrears around Rs 5,000, an XEN 3 for about Rs 50,000, an SE 4 for about Rs 100,000, and the CEO up to 6. Interest is charged at the prevailing bank rate.

Who can approve installments

MEPCO’s published FAQ sets out these powers for general connections:

Officer Arrears (about) Equal monthly installments
Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Rs 5,000 Up to 3
Executive Engineer (XEN) Rs 50,000 Up to 3
Superintending Engineer (SE) Rs 100,000 Up to 4
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Higher amounts Up to 6

These powers are meant for genuine and deserving cases and for consumers who have not defaulted in the last six months.

What it costs

When dues are allowed in installments, interest at the current bank rate is charged on them. The installment is added to your monthly bill, which you must keep paying in full alongside it.

How to apply

  1. Check your dues. Open your current bill and note the arrears and any outstanding installments.
  2. Go early. Visit your sub-division customer service centre before the due date.
  3. Bring documents. Latest bill, your CNIC and, if you are not the registered consumer, proof that you occupy the premises.
  4. Submit a written request explaining why you need installments.
  5. Sign the undertaking. MEPCO takes an affidavit that you will pay both the installment and the monthly bill and will not ask for further installments.
  6. Pay the first part. Pay the current bill and the first installment as instructed; later installments then appear on your bills.

Conditions to keep in mind

  • Installments are a facility, not a right; the officer decides.
  • Missing an installment or a monthly bill can lead to disconnection.
  • Disconnected consumers usually need to clear dues before reconnection.
  • Installments appear on later bills as Installment and Outstanding Installments; see how to read your bill.

Is there a disputed amount?

If the arrears are wrong, for example a payment that was never posted, don’t ask for installments. Show the receipt and ask for a correction instead. For a detection bill or a reading dispute, register a complaint through MEPCO complaints.
