Why a CNIC can’t open your bill
Bills are linked to a connection, not to a person. One CNIC can own several meters, and many meters are still registered in the name of a previous owner or a late parent. So the billing system is built around the reference number, which identifies the exact connection. Sites claiming “bill by CNIC” either don’t work or simply collect personal data. Never type your CNIC, bank PIN or OTP on such sites.
MEPCO does use your CNIC in its own service processes, such as a change of name, a new connection, or CNIC registration against your connection. That is done through MEPCO, not through a bill-check website.
6 ways to recover a lost reference number
- Wallet or bank app history. Open JazzCash, Easypaisa or your banking app and look at past electricity payments. The receipt shows the reference number you paid.
- Photos and downloads. Search your phone gallery and WhatsApp for a picture or PDF of an old bill.
- Bank stamp copy. If you pay at a branch, the stamped lower part of an old bill shows the number.
- Ask the owner, landlord or neighbour. Neighbours’ numbers will not open your bill, but your landlord or the previous owner may have the bill.
- MEPCO helpline. Call 118 or 0800-63726 with your name, CNIC and full address and ask for your reference number.
- Sub-division office. Visit your area’s customer service centre with your CNIC and property papers. They can trace the connection and print a duplicate bill.
Once you have the number, check your MEPCO bill online and tick “Remember this number” so you never lose it again.
Reference number vs customer ID vs meter number
| Number | Length | Opens bill online? | Where on the bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reference No | 14 digits | Yes | Consumer Detail box, first line |
| Customer ID | 10 digits | Yes | Just below the reference number |
| Meter No | Varies | No | Meter Info section |
| CNIC | 13 digits | No | Not printed on the bill page |
1 Reference No: 14 digits, first line of the "Consumer Detail" box at the top left. 2 Customer ID: 10 digits, just below it in the same box. Either number opens the same bill.
MEPCO bill check by reference number: the reliable route
Once you’ve found the number, the MEPCO bill check by reference number takes under a minute:
- Copy the 14 digits from the first line of the Consumer Detail box. Ignore any spaces or dashes; they’re only there to make it readable.
- Select Reference No, keep U for urban or choose R for a rural connection, and press Search.
- Check the name and address on the bill that opens. If they aren’t yours, you’ve got a neighbour’s or previous tenant’s number.
If the reference number doesn’t work, try the 10-digit customer ID from the same bill. Both open the same bill. More tips are on the MEPCO online bill check page.
Register your CNIC with your connection
MEPCO runs a CNIC registration facility so that the right person is linked to each connection. Linking an active taxpayer’s CNIC matters too: advance income tax on bills applies by the status of the CNIC on the connection. See taxes on your MEPCO bill and, if the meter is in someone else’s name, MEPCO name change.
Keep your CNIC safe
- A bill lookup never needs your CNIC, password, PIN or OTP.
- MEPCO does not collect payments through phone calls or personal accounts.
- If someone calls asking for “verification” money to avoid disconnection, hang up and call 118.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check my MEPCO bill with my CNIC number?
No. The PITC billing system searches only by the 14-digit reference number or the 10-digit customer ID. A CNIC cannot open a bill online.
How can I find my MEPCO reference number if I lost my bill?
Look at past payments in your bank or wallet app, search your phone for a photo of an old bill, or ask MEPCO on 118 or 0800-63726, or at your sub-division office, to trace it from your CNIC and address.
Can I check my bill by meter number?
No. The meter number is printed on the bill but the online system does not search by it. Use the reference number or customer ID.
Is it safe to enter my CNIC on bill-check websites?
There is no need to. Genuine bill lookups use only the reference number or customer ID. Avoid sites that ask for your CNIC, PIN or OTP.
Where is the reference number on a MEPCO bill?
Look at the Consumer Detail box at the top left of any MEPCO bill. The first line is the 14-digit reference number, and the 10-digit customer ID sits just below it. Either one opens your bill online; the meter number and your CNIC do not.
Are the reference number and customer ID the same thing?
No, but both point to the same connection. The reference number has 14 digits and the customer ID has 10, and both are printed in the Consumer Detail box. On the official PITC web bill and on this page, either one opens the same current bill.
